Sorry we still under construction!
The MAST Foundation presents a selection of large colour photographs taken by Thomas Struth since at industrial sites and scientific research centres throughout the world that represent cutting-edge technological experimentation and innovation.
One of the best known artists on the international scene, Struth takes us in realms and forbidden zones to which we do not normally have access, giving us a glimpse into the unexplored world behind technological innovation in 25 large-format works on display at the MAST PhotoGallery. Space research labs, plasma fusion experiments, operating theatres, and a drilling platform are photographed with painstaking precision and a remarkable visual sensibility.
The artist looks at sites where contemporary society is transformed and shows us scientific, highly technological experiments, developments, research, calibrations and interventions that will at some point, directly or not, impact our lives. In these images we can perceive the complexity, importance, and force of these processes, but we can also sense the power and the politics of knowledge, and the business they conceal. As a reference to craftsmanship and the human capacity for highly developed artisanal skills and artistic precision, at Level 0 of the MAST. Featuring five classic guitar lessons by Frank Bungarten at the Lucerne Hochschule, the video shows the meticulously orchestrated interaction between teacher and students in music tuition and demonstrates just what it takes in terms of teaching and learning, giving and receiving.

What is the common link between events that seem so different and distant, like the electoral success of Donald Trump in the United States, the lure of the Islamic State for young people in many countries, Brexit, or the victory of Narendra Modi's Hindu nationalists in India? How can we explain the origins of this great wave of paranoid hatred that seems to be sweeping the world?
Pankaj Mishra responds to our bewilderment by turning his gaze back to the 18th century before returning it to the present. In his latest book, Age of Anger , the author retraces the common thread running through so many of today's events to the promise heralded by Enlightenment: a future of justice, equality, and prosperity which was revealed, for most of humanity, to be just an illusion, if not outright deception.
Those excluded from that new world react in awful ways, whether with intense hatred towards made-up enemies, attempts to recreate an imaginary golden age, or self-assertion through savage acts of violence. It was from the ranks of the poor that 19th-century militants drew their recruits: angry young men became nationalists in Germany, messianic revolutionaries in Russia, anarchist terrorists throughout the world.
Pankaj Mishra is a novelist and essayist born in northern India in There are books we cannot forget, books that are dazzling encounters. But what does reading really mean? The result is a book which is theoretical and intimate at the same time, an intense, autobiographical inquiry of what reading means to our life, a passionate praise of the book in a time when many consider it dead. Recalcati delves into the meanders of this experience, showing us how reading is not scholarly study, mere accumulation of knowledge, but a way to offer life the chance of an encounter with the most secret part of itself, an opportunity of renovation, expansion and transformation.
Because the journey into a book is a journey into love. ROAD 4. Richard Mosse has spent the past few years documenting the ongoing refugee and migration crisis facing the Middle East, North Africa and Europe. At the crux of this work is an attempt to reveal and question how governments and societies perceive refugees, while simultaneously foregrounding the inhumane conditions they endure.
His last project is a meticulous documentation of refugee camps and staging sites located across migration routes from the Middle East and Central Asia into the European Union, focusing on the punishing environments in which refugees endure a byzantine state of limbo. Drawing attention to the provisional architecture and organization of refugee camps, Mosse highlights the ways refugees and migrants are excluded from participating or contributing to our modern societies.

Moving goods, Moving people , the MAST Foundation presents a series of movies on the themes of global mobility, transport, and migrations. Series organised in collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna. In a desolate corner of the Sicilian countryside lives a family of farmers who have worked the land for generations, inextricably bound to nature and to the mysterious spirits of the dead which have always accompanied the living in those areas.
Their never-changing everyday life is interrupted by news from the New World describing it as a land of astonishing abundance. Salvatore decides to sell everything—home, land, and animals—to bring his children and his elderly mother to a place where work and bread aren't as scarce. But to become citizens of the New World, they have to die and be born again. The four must abandon their archaic habits and superstitions, striving to toughen both body and mind, learning to obey and to pledge their loyalty to a new authority, and surrendering to modernity.
They'll have to do it in the suspended time of the ocean crossing: four long weeks that separate them from their final judgement at Ellis Island, that wondrous, terrible place where families are forced to decide, and are often separated forever. Not all of them are destined to cross through the gates of Paradise. Ellis, starring Roberto De Niro and written by Erich Roth, is a work that shakes up our collective memory, bringing us back to the early years of Ellis Island, the gate of entry to the New World. The documentary is set in the abandoned sanatorium on the island facing New York, and through the touching art installation Unframed by the French photographer JR, it recalls the story of the immigrants who literally made America what it is.
The men, women, and children who fled from poverty, discrimination, and dictatorships in search of a new life in the early decades of the twentieth century foreshadow the destiny of those who, in a globalised world, now seek the same opportunities for safety and dignity in America and Europe. At dawn he should oversee the largest concrete pour of his career thus far.
A fast-paced cinematographic experience in which the timing of the events coincides with the timing of the narration, this film literally captures us, catapulting us into a car seat next to the protagonist and setting before us the themes of fairness, of assuming one's responsibility, no matter how uncomfortable and punitive it may be, and of the extreme fragility of the moral constructs on which we build our existence and our certainties.
Simon is a swimming instructor in a city-run pool in Calais on the north coast of France. His marriage is on the rocks, and he does his job on autopilot until he meets Bilal, a young, undocumented Kurd who has has crossed Europe to reach England and the woman he loves. After a failed attempt to cross the border, the only way Bilal can realise his dream is by swimming across the Channel, and Simon is the only one who can help him train: the young man's bravery and his determination to keep his love at all costs convinces Simon to put himself personally on the line, defying the law to help him in what seems to be an impossible endeavour.

The maritime shipping industry is a key player in the world economy, and it forms the basis of our model of modern civilisation; without it, it would be impossible to fulfil the ever-growing demands of our societies. Yet the functioning and rules of this industry remain unknown to most, while its hidden costs affect the lives of us all. Due to their size, freight ships can no longer berth at city harbours; they have moved far away from the eyes of public opinion, behind gates and barriers. But who pulls the strings in this billion-dollar business?
To what extent does this industry influence national politics? How does it impact the environment? Taking us on a journey through the oceans, the film offers a courageous investigation into international maritime shipping and sheds light on the consequences of an all but invisible industry. There is some room for a "mea culpa" there. By Edgar Jones. London: Profile Books, August - A message from H. I wish to commend the founding members of the ISSNAF Foundation and to all the contributors to its creation, as well as extend my best wishes for success to an organization that I believe will play a very important role in Italian society. For Italy, each represents an extraordinary opportunity.
Many Italian academic and scientific professionals living and working in North America participate in one way or another in projects that develop in Italy, as consultants for example, and are in any case willing to welcome academicians, young collaborators and research graduates into the prestigious laboratories where they work. The phenomenon of scientific emigration, thus, is not seen as only a hemorrhaging of talent but also as an opportunity for two-way exchanges, collaboration, and synergy.
To take better advantage of the opportunities it is necessary to involve those who are active in the research and development fields in North America, strengthening the instruments that can give them greater visibility in Italy. All this also in the perspective of facilitating the flows of information between the two countries with respect to the scientific, academic and post-academic opportunities for collaboration offered by American and Italian institutions.
I have no doubts that the Foundation will allow, on the one hand, a growth of many Italian cultural, scientific and technological sectors, and on the other, a further strengthening of the relations between Italy and the USA. The role of the Embassy will be to contribute to its consolidation and acquisition of the necessary prominence, in North America first and then in Italy, in keeping with the institutional support due to this storehouse of culture and activity. When CreAgri began working with the juice of olives and the by-products resulting from the milling of the olives used for the production of olive oil, the idea that agricultural by-products could have a market value, and above all applications in health and wellness, seemed a far-fetched belief.
Fast-forward to today, and this idea is not only a common belief, but is also being celebrated at Expo , the universal expo currently held Milan Italy, which theme "Feeding the Planet Energy for Life" has propelled the concept to a global dimension. CreAgri's work has had a wider impact than just improving the management of agricultural waste, and by-products. It has given rise also to a new era in the olive industry, and in the use of polyphenols—olive's bioactive nutrients. Discovering that the juice of the olive contains from to more polyphenols than extra- virgin olive oil, CreAgri devised a method to mechanically separate the bioactives from the juice obtained during milling of the olives.
Utilizing the water of the olives, CreAgri was able, for the first time in the history of olive's utilization, to produce polyphenols from something other than olive oil. Furthermore, being produced on an industrial scale--before CreAgri they were extracted from olive oil in milligrams--they could now be used for the creation of consumer products ranging from nutraceuticals, to functional foods and beverages, to cosmeceuticals, and botanicals.
CreAgri's work has since been recognized internationally both for its innovation quotient with a Nutraceutical Business Technology Award in , and for its effectiveness in with a Paris Polyphenols Award from the International Society of Antioxidant in Nutrition and Health.
