Written with love, compassion and a very pure sense of curiosity, Kept in the Dark is such a compelling book, and I've recommended to several close friends since finishing it.
I feel like I could read this book several times and discover something new to think about every time. Highly recommended! Aug 18, Meghan Redmile rated it it was amazing. An emotional story that continuously tugs at your heart strings This was beautifully written. I can't imagine the strength it took to not only process what Ron found in the box, but then to write it all out and let the world into his family's dark secret.
The unconditional love between his parents was powerful. I especially enjoyed the letters his father wrote. As a society, we rarely read anything where the man lets his guard down and shows his weakness or emotions. The letters he wrote from pris An emotional story that continuously tugs at your heart strings This was beautifully written.
The letters he wrote from prison showed the raw emotion and how badly he needed his wife to be strong for the two of them, to get him through it all. Through the letters and bits of information Ron had learned, you see how strong his mother was. She went through hell and back but didn't let anyone or anything stop her from living day to day. She had to keep going, she had her husband that probably wouldn't have survived mentally or emotionally in prison and she had to raise her young son.
Kept in the Dark: An Introduction
I went through an emotional rollercoaster reading the story. I honestly don't know where I sit at the moment. I want to be on their side and feel for them, but we don't know the entire story yet? Was he guilty? Was it rumors that got him in trouble? Why did his wife forgive and stay?
Why keep this from your son, but leave enough evidence to tell him only part of the story once they passed away?
Why doesn't he say he admit to doing something horrible, or plead his innocence? Why does the court system jerk them around so much? Ron encourages the reader to keep an open mind and not judge too quickly. You will flip flop as you read through the story and letters. I look forward to reading more of the story if there is one and I wish Ron all the best in his research.
I do hope he can uncover more, not just to write the story, but for him to have closure. Mar 12, Randy Clark rated it it was amazing. It is tough to say a lot about this true, heart wrenching, honest account of one man's coming to terms with family secrets after his parents are dead - without creating a spoiler. The book is piercing while not graphic and explores the many faces we each wear as we go through life - for those we love and those with whom we have a passing experience. Aug 12, Sherry rated it it was amazing.
Kept In The Dark - Trollope Society
Such a brave move for Ron to open the door to this closet and expose a hidden family secret of which he was unaware until after his parent's deaths. For all practical purposes, the book was written by Ron's parents in the early 's in the form of letters exchanged during a difficult period of their marriage. Ron researched available court documents, newspaper clippings and talked with the few people still living who could possibly shed some light on the story.

While the subject matter of child molestation may seem to be the core of the story, I found the underlying story of love and forgiveness to be paramount. I highly recommend this book. Jul 28, Alice rated it it was ok.
